Rick Ankiel's Mustache

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cardinals on Friday placed shortstop Khalil Greene on the disabled list due to social anxiety disorder. The timing of his return remains uncertain.

“It’s just something that has become progressively more and more difficult to deal with,” Greene said. “It’s been with me this year and, I guess, to a lesser degree last year. The club thought this was the way to go and, at this point, I can’t say I disagree.”

I like the fact that Greene, LaRussa and the club are publicly dealing with this.  It’s a serious problem that many people face and not just ballplayers. There have been some ugly comments about how $2M should cure any anxiety or depression and that just goes to show that it’s not the case.  For some guys the money might be the answer, but for others, they are going out night after night and emotionally giving everything they have to the game and to their team.  Falling up short and being able to cope and deal with it is much of a neceesary skill as catching the ball.
