Rick Ankiel's Mustache
In Praise of Dave Duncan

probationaryperiod:

It is difficult to argue with Duncan’s success. His pitching staffs annually strike out far fewer batters than the league average, and yet they win games consistently. Beginning with the 2001 season, here is where the Cardinals have ranked in the National League in strikeouts: 11, 12, 12, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 13. Not impressed? Now here is where the Cardinals rank in wins in the league over those nine years combined: 1.

I’m sure he had pine tar on his cap. He didn’t have any problem getting a grip. Balls like that can generate a lot more movement than a slick ball that hasn’t been rubbed up … I’ve been around for 40-plus years now and I’ve never seen a major-league baseball game played with balls like that.
Dave Duncan has a different take on how Arroyo was getting through his innings.

Dave Duncan Returns

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said after Tuesday’s 1-0 victory that he couldn’t remember a game since they’ve been together as the longest pitching coach-manager tandem in baseball history that he didn’t have Dave Duncan at his side for a game. Tuesday was a first. Tonight won’t be the second.
