St. Louis Cardinals, Brad Penny reach a deal

“When a guy pitches against us and I’m concerned and I don’t like it, I want him pitching for us,” manager Tony La Russa said. “We’ve been after him for years. I know he’s from Oklahoma. We’re excited we can get him. I know he’s going to fall right in line with the other guys we have in terms of work ethic and attention to detail. Dunc and I are very excited.”

I may be the odd man out here, but I like this move.  Stay healthy, Brad.

The Cardinals and Brad Penny have a letter of agreement, for a $7.5 million base and $1.5 in performances bonuses. Physical likely on Tues.

From my one-time substitute teacher in highschool chemistry to $7.5 mill.  Not too shabby.

Oooh.  Interesting.  I hadn’t heard this one.

The St. Louis Cardinals have expressed interest in starting pitcher Brad Penny, and according to at least one rival team and another baseball source they are close to landing the righthander.

Penny, last with the San Francisco Giants, turned down a one-year, incentive-laden deal with that club so that he could explore free agency. An online report from the San Jose Mercury News mentioned that the Cardinals had become the favorite to land Penny. Another baseball source has described the talks with the Cardinals as progressing toward an agreement. One person with knowledge of the negotiations described them as “still talking.”
